350z vs Porsche Caymen

Recommended Posts

The porsche has the engine in the rear better squat more traction and very fat tyres

Not much in it but the engine in the mid - rear of the car makes for a better 60'

Was just reading the specs. Porsche claims to have a quicker car than the 350z. But in theory the 350z should be quicker.

Porsche Caymen S Manual

Max. Power (DIN) 217 kW (295 hp)

Max. torque 340 Nm 340 Nm

Acceleration from 0 - 100 km/h 5.4 s

Permissible gross weight 1,630 kg

Compared to a 2006 Nissan 350z

Power 221kW @ 6400rpm

Torque 353Nm @ 4800rpm

Kerb Weight 1490kg

So the 350z has more power, more torque and less weight. But the porsche is quicker somehow. The time for the Z 0-100 from what I remember is 5.9s

The 2007 350z Specs are;

Max power (kW @ rpm) 230@6800

Max torque (Nm @ rpm) 358@4800

Tare weight (kg) 1480

0-100 5.5

and the gearing also makes a difference.

Yeah I'm thinking in this case that gearing and traction may be making the Porsche the winner...

I would like to see a roll on race in 3rd gear from about 100kph +

Well it's definitely not the gearing, Nissan has higher gearing in all gears after final drive...

Cayman 350Z

Ratio 1 3.82 3.794

Ratio 2 2.2 2.324

Ratio 3 1.52 1.624

Ratio 4 1.22 1.271

Ratio 5 1.02 1

Ratio 6 0.84 0.794

Final drive ratio 3.44 3.538

I think it's a case of numbers not quite telling the whole story. On paper they are meant to be the same, but the Cayman arrives at peak torque earlier in the rev range and probably delivers more torque at the same RPM-point than the 350Z. It also tends to be a bit faster on the track due to its physical dimensions (wheelbase:track, etc).

The 2007 Caymen S has a kerb weight of only 1260kg (no point comparing "permissable gross weight" of the Porsche with "kerb weight" of the Nissan), which is why it is faster.
